Permits & Highway Licences

Skip permits arranged for you

We deal with the council so you don't have to — safe, legal and hassle-free skip placement across London.

Legal & Safe Placement

Do you need a skip permit?

When hiring a skip, it is important to ensure it is placed in a safe and suitable location that allows easy access for loading and collection.

If your skip can be positioned on private land, such as a driveway or private property, no permit is usually required.

However, if the skip needs to be placed on a public road, pavement, or parking bay, a permit must be obtained from the relevant local authority before delivery. Some councils may also require additional licences or parking bay suspensions, which may incur extra charges.

At 1st Recycling, we can arrange all necessary permits on your behalf, saving you time and ensuring your skip is placed legally and safely.

Our team will:

  • Liaise directly with your local council
  • Apply for the required skip permit
  • Arrange parking bay suspensions where necessary
  • Advise on permit costs and waiting times
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations

Permit approval times vary between councils and can range from a few days to several weeks, so we recommend contacting us as early as possible.

If you are unsure whether a permit is required, our team will be happy to advise.

Council Permits

A council skip permit (also called a skip licence) is legally required whenever a skip is placed on a public highway — including roads, pavements, verges and parking bays. Each London borough sets its own fee, typically £30–£90, and issues a permit for a defined period (often 1–2 weeks).

  • Skip must display reflective markings & cones/lights at night
  • Permit copy held by carrier and available on request
  • Fines apply for skips placed without a valid permit

Parking Bay Suspensions

In Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) — common across most of inner London — a parking bay suspension is needed in addition to the skip permit. The Council physically signs the bay 5–7 days in advance to clear it for skip delivery.

  • Suspension fees charged per metre, per day
  • Usually 5–7 working days notice required
  • We measure the skip & request the correct length

Waiting Times

Permit lead times vary considerably between London boroughs. Plan ahead to keep your project on schedule.

  • Standard permit: 3–5 working days
  • Parking bay suspension: 5–7 working days
  • Some boroughs (e.g. RBKC, Westminster): up to 10 days
  • Emergency permits available in select boroughs (extra fee)

  • We submit the application using our carrier details
  • Permit & suspension fees added to your invoice at cost
  • We deliver, position and collect within the permitted window
  • No paperwork or council calls for you
